Between 1950 and 1958 he won the Ohio Championship in foil three times and in sabre twice and Northeastern Ohio division championships in foil six times and in sabre twice. Became first fencer to win two gold medals in the All-Ohio Championships in 1953. Turned professional in 1960 to become coach of the Cleveland State University (then Fenn College) fencing team, a position he still holds.
National collegiate 220-yard low hurdles champion at Massachusetts Institute of technology in 1927 and collegiate All-American in 1926 and 1927. Set NCAA record in winning low hurdles event. Earlier in career he won National Junior AAU 220-yard low hurdles and title and New England AAU high and low hurdles titles. Captained the 1927 MIT team.
Member of 1964 U.S. Olympic Women’s Track Team and a member of the 1963 and 1964 AAU All-American Women’s Track and Field teams. Represented U.S. in international competition against Great Britain, West Germany, Poland and Russia. Set American records in the 800 meters and 880-yard run during one-week period in 1963. Set AAU Championships record in 800-meters in 1964.
Among the first great wrestling products to come out of the Cleveland school system, winning three straight Ohio High School state titles for West High in 1949, 1950 and 1951. Went to Toledo University where he was Mid-American Conference champion three times and captain of two Mid-American Conference championship teams. Inducted into Ohio Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1975. Has been coach of Cleveland State University’s wrestling team since 1964.
Named to the U.S. Women’s Curtis Cup Team in 1948 to highlight a notable career on the links. Won the Women’s City title in 1944, 1946 and 1947 and the Women’s Ohio title in 1946 and 1947. Qualified for the Women’s Western and Amateur championships several times.
Won Cleveland City Amateur Championship in 1900 and 1901 and the first Ohio Amateur Championship in 1904. Began competing in 1897 and qualified for the National Amateur Championship 1899.
Ohio Golf Champion in 1915 and 1921 and winner of numerous Cleveland District P.G.A. titles. Recognized as one of the leading golf instructors in the country and as a designer and builder of golf courses. Served for many years as head professional at the Acacia Country Club.
Served as head professional from 1911 until 1952 at the Mayfield Country Club, a course he himself designed. Also designed and built The Westwood Country Club. Finished second in the National Open in 1899 and was still active as a golfer in his mid-80s.
Winner of the famed Heisman Trophy in 1944 when he led Ohio State University to an unbeaten, untied season, was a unanimous All-American selection at halfback and was voted the most valuable player in the Big Ten. Starred at Cleveland Rhodes High before enrolling at OSU where he was a starter for three seasons.
Among the finest players in Western Reserve University’s football history. Named as an end on the 1937 Little All-American Team. Also named to the All-American Team. Also named to the All-Ohio and All Big Four teams during his brilliant Career. Played in 53 consecutive games without experiencing defeat: 28 at Dover (Ohio) High School and 25 at Western Reserve. Picked to be on Sports Illustrated’s 1962’s Silver Anniversary All-American Football Team.
